Despite all he’s done to build up the New York’s Tribeca neighborhood, Robert DeNiro is having a run-in with the city Landmarks Commission.

DeNiro’s Greenwich Hotel, at 377 Greenwich Street, could have its top floor dismantled, according to the New York Daily News. New York’s Landmarks Commission determined that the hotel’s penthouse apartment did not comply with the specifications it claimed it would meet when the addition of the top floor of the hotel was approved for construction in 2004.
After completion, the building was steeper and more visible from the street than its plans outlined. DeNiro plans to ask the commission to retroactively approve the building’s current dimensions.
DeNiro, a native New Yorker, is known for his revitalization of Tribeca and the Hollywood connections he has brought with him to the neighborhood.
For starters, he is a restaurateur, investing in the Tribeca Grill, next door to the hotel. Additional investors include Bill Murray, Ed Harris, Sean Penn, Russell Simmons, Mikhail Baryshnikov, Christopher Walken and Harvey Weinstein.
DeNiro also is an investor in New York restaurant hot spot Nobu, which has a location in Tribeca as well as on 57th street. In 2010, DeNiro plans to open Nobu Hotel and Residences.
The Tribeca Film Festival was co-founded by DeNiro, along with his partners Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff. The festival’s website outlines DeNiro’s mission to “spur the economic and cultural revitalization of lower Manhattan” after September 11 by highlighting New York as a film-making capital throughout the annual two-week festival.
