  • Success at NBC hasn’t been as easy as Silverman had hoped

Two years ago, Ben Silverman took on the job of restoring NBC’s entertainment lineup to its former glory.

So far, Silverman, 38, hasn’t met that goal, according to The New York Times.

“NBC has for several years been all but desperate for a new breakout show — or two or three,” wrote Bill Carter in the Times. “Mr. Silverman’s first full cycle of programs has not yet produced anything fitting that description.”

For sure, Silverman’s performance has been pulled down by external factors. First there was the writer’s strike that disrupted the 2007-2008 season. Then, there has been the recession.

But Silverman’s so-so showing is nonetheless surprising, given his background and his proven talent for creating hits.

In a sense, Silverman was born to be television executive in charge of programming, as his mother, Mary D. Silverman, has had a similar role at Court TV, USA Network and other venues.

He’s also no stranger to the creative arts, as his father, Stanley Silverman, is a composer who has created musical scores for movies and the theater, most notably working with playwright Arthur Miller.

After graduating from Tufts University, Ben Silverman also worked for Brandon Tartikoff, who had revived NBC in the 1980s, bringing it the hit shows, “Hill Street Blues,” “Cheers” “The Cosby Show” and “L.A. Law.”

Later, Silverman joined the William Morris Agency, soon working out of London. While there, he helped bring “Survivor” and “Who Wants to be a Millionaire” to the U.S. television audience.

Silverman left William Morris in 2002 when he founded Reveille, a production company.

While at Reveille, Silverman brought “The Office,” “Ugly Betty,” “The Biggest Loser” and other hits to television here. (Shine Limited, a British company owned by Elisabeth Murdoch, daughter of Rupert Murdoch, bought Reveille last year for $125 million.)

Given this track record, it’s no surprise that NBC made Silverman the co-chairman of NBC Universal Entertainment and NBC Universal Television Group in 2007.

Silverman focuses on the programming side of the business, while lawyer Marc Graboff, the other co-chairman, handles the business side.

Despite his lack of experience as a network executive, Silverman was confident when he began work at NBC.

“The industry hasn’t seen an executive like me in a long time,” he told Esquire magazine.

He then went on to label his counterparts at ABC and FOX as “D-girls,” a term defined by Esquire as “industry slang for cute young development execs with little power.”

Adding insult to insult, Silverman also called Steve McPherson, ABC’s entertainment president, a “moron.”

Not surprisingly, Silverman’s remarks caught the attention of his boss.

“Ben made some mistakes in his first year,” Jeff Zucker, the CEO of NBC Universal told the Times. “The first year was a learning experience. He had to learn how to work inside a corporation.”

Zucker did say that Silverman is still the right person for the job.

“Ben has a skill set that is incredibly appropriate for these times,” he said. “If we weren’t supportive of Ben, he wouldn’t be here.”

    • Muck tracker – Ezra Merkin resigns as synagogue officer

      May 22, 2009 at 8:18am

      J. Ezra Merkin, the financier who was a major feeder to Bernard L. Madoff’s Ponzi scheme, stepped down Wednesday night as an officer of the Fifth Avenue Synagogue, the New York Times reports. He declined a nomination to be chairman.

    • Emmy judges love 30 Rock, Mad Men; viewers not so much (Muckety)

They’re far from the most-watched shows on television, but 30 Rock and Mad Men were the big winners at last night’s 60th Emmy Awards ceremony.

30 Rock took home the award for outstanding comedy series, with leading actor awards going to its stars Tina Fey and Alec Baldwin. Fey, 30 Rock’s producer and creator, also won for outstanding writing for a comedy series.

As she accepted her Emmys, Fey took the opportunity to plug 30 Rock, which despite its critical acclaim, has not excelled in the ratings.

After 30 Rock took the Emmy for best comedy series last year, Fey thanked her “dozens” of viewers. This year, she reminded the audience that her show could be “viewed on NBC.com, Hulu, iTunes, United Airlines and occasionally on actual television.”

30 Rock currently averages about 5 million viewers per episode, ranking it far below the popular Two and a Half Men, which has won Emmys only in technical categories and averages 15 million viewers per episode.

The winner for best drama series could also use the Emmy publicity to increase viewership.

The award for outstanding drama series went to AMC’s Mad Men, making it the first basic cable show to win in the drama category. The show, which averaged a mere 915,000 viewers in its first season, scored an additional five Emmys, including outstanding writing for a drama series.

New episodes of 30 Rock restart October 30th on NBC, with guest stars Jennifer Aniston and Oprah Winfrey slated to appear in the third season.

AMC is in the midst of airing the second season of Mad Men, on Sundays at 10 p.m.

    • Martha Stewart’s daughter, Alexis, to roast Mom on new show

This fall, a new cable show called Whatever, Martha! will poke fun at old episodes of Living with Martha Stewart, which ran from 1991 to 2004.

The lead poker will be Martha’s own daughter, Alexis Stewart.

She will co-host with Jennifer Koppelman Hutt, daughter of Charles Koppelman, the chairman of Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia.

Despite their connections to Stewart and her company, the co-hosts aren’t planning on going easy on the homemaking icon.

While her daughter told Martha Stewart she “wouldn’t be mean,” Alexis Stewart divulged to the New York Times that “nothing is off limits, including her mother’s clothes, fastidiousness and habit of mixing sexual innuendo with her household hints.”

Whatever, Martha! is expected to appeal to a younger audience. Martha Stewart’s previous attempt to boost the number of fans in their early 20s and 30s was not a success. The magazine Blueprint, geared for younger readers, was put out by Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia, but lasted only a year before it folded. The last issue of Blueprint ran in January/February 2008.

Stewart and Koppelman Hutt currently co-host Whatever…with Alexis & Jennifer, a radio-show that runs on satellite radio provider Sirius. As co-hosts, their show’s website describes them as “having no shame, no edit button and no ability to be politically correct,” an attitude they plan on taking to their television show.

Whatever, Martha! debuts on cable channel, Fine Living, on Sept. 16th.

The organization will air a one-hour special simultaneously on three of the four of the country’s top TV networks on Sept. 5. The special will combine celebrity performances with reporting by news anchors Charles Gibson, Brian Williams and Katie Couric on ABC, NBC and CBS.

Couric, one of the leaders of Stand up to Cancer, lost her husband to the disease in 1998. Other heads of the organization include former Paramount Pictures chair Sherry Lansing, and Spider-Man producer Laura Ziskin.

Stand Up to Cancer plans to serve as an umbrella organization to bring together other cancer nonprofits to raise funds for cancer research. The American Association for Cancer Research, the Entertainment Industry Foundation and the Noreen Fraser Foundation are among the leading organizations working with Stand Up to Cancer. Others include the Lance Armstrong Foundation, the American Cancer Society and Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

Major League Baseball, Revlon, AOL, and the AARP are corporate sponsors.

In addition to the TV special, the organization will also produce TV, radio and print public service announcements, the first of which is featured on its website. Celebrities such as Larry David, Morgan Freeman, Tony Hawk, Tobey Maguire, Jodie Foster and Lance Armstrong have appeared in the organization’s first videos.

    • Will MTV audience care who rocked the cradle?

MTV’s Rock the Cradle has kicked off its debut season, but does the average MTV reality show fan even care about these celebuspawn?

Hint: Click in map to explore connectionsStory continues below interactive map

The nine contestants are the children of musicians of the ’70s, ’80s and ’90s. Specifically, they are the offspring of band members from Twisted Sister, The Eagles, The Doobie Brothers and the artists MC Hammer, Kenny Loggins, Al. B Sure!, Eddie Money, Bobby Brown and Olivia Newton-John.

MTV’s website describes the premise of the show, “Yeah, we’re searching for the next superstar, but this isn’t your average, every day singing competition. We’re shining the spotlight on children of rock stars to see who has what it takes to step out of the parental shadow and fulfill their DNA destiny. ‘Cause, really, isn’t everything better when celebrities are involved?”

But really, how many typical MTV viewers even know the music that made the parents of these contestants famous? Aside from seeing episodes of Being Bobby Brown on Bravo and reruns of the movie Grease on cable, it’s likely that “Hammer time,” would be nothing more than a legend for today’s teens, MTV’s target audience.

The contestants of Rock the Cradle sing each week, and the one with the highest score from the judges is safe from elimination. The rest have to depend on viewer support to keep them from being kicked off the show.

The show is judged by Britney Spears’ former manager Larry Rudolph, choreographer Jamie King, and celebrity stylist June Ambrose.

After the first episode, which aired last week, Lucy Walsh, daughter of The Eagles’ Joe Walsh, received the highest score, which isn’t too surprising. She’s the only contestant who already has a record deal, with Island Records.

Rock the Cradle may get some success if the contestants can hold audience attention without relying on famous parents. It’s pretty certain that the fans of Kenny Loggins, The Doobie Brothers and Olivia Newton-John aren’t tuning in to MTV regularly.

Rock the Cradle airs on MTV on Thursday at 10 p.m.

    • Diddy on the way to a hat trick?

      P. Diddy, Puff Daddy, Sean Combs, Diddy: It doesn’t matter what you call him, this man is a hit maker.

Diddy has put together two successful bands through his Making the Band franchise: Danity Kane and Day26. They have officially taken over the charts.

According to Nielsen SoundScan, Danity Kane’s sophomore album, Welcome to the Dollhouse, sold 236,000 copies in its first week. The album was released on March 18.

Yesterday, Billboard reported that Danity Kane dropped from the top position on the Billboard 200 chart, and was replaced by Day26’s debut album. Day26 sold 190,000 records in comparison to Danity Kane’s 89,000 this week. Both groups are on the Bad Boy record label, which Diddy heads as CEO and founder.

Diddy is also the mastermind behind the Making the Band TV series on MTV. He put together the all-female pop/hip-hop group Danity Kane by eliminating potential candidates on the reality show Making the Band 3, which he produced. Danity Kane released their debut, self-titled album in 2006.

This year, he followed Danity Kane’s success with another season of Making the Band, in which he searched for members to make a soulful male R&B group. Making the Band 4 conceived the band Day26 and solo artist Donnie Klang, who didn’t make the band but was signed to Bad Boy records anyway.

Klang is expected to release an album soon, although a release date has not yet been announced. His first single, “Take you There,” which features Diddy rapping, is currently available on iTunes.

If Klang’s album hits number one when it’s released, Diddy will have produced a hat trick of top albums and will be paving the way for a successful Making the Band Tour. It was announced on the Making the Band finale that Danity Kane, Day26, and Donnie Klang will perform together in various cities this summer.

Making the Band certainly doesn’t portray Diddy’s modest side. Throughout the show, Diddy flaunts his star-status, shows off his wealth and refers to himself as the best in the business. Diddy even coins his own phrase, “Bitchassness,” which he stamps on a T-shirt, now commercially available through his clothing line Sean John.

After all the bravado and bragging, the charts have confirmed what Diddy has stated all along: He is on his way to re-establishing Bad Boy Records as a hip-hop empire, a status it hasn’t held since the late ’90s when was at its peak with leading artists Notorious B.I.G., Mase, 112, and Diddy himself.

    • Matt Santos is Barack Obama’s avatar

      Jimmy Smits and Barack Obama
      Jimmy Smits and Barack Obama

Fans of The West Wing have noticed uncanny parallels between the show’s Texas Rep. Matt Santos, and Illinois Sen. Barack Obama.

Like Obama, Santos is a young, charismatic politician making a long-shot bid for the presidency. Like Obama, he refuses to be defined, or limited, by his ethnicity. And like Obama, he challenges a better-known establishment Democrat who wears the mantle of inevitability.

      Life imitating art?

Actually, just the reverse, says former West Wing writer and producer Eli Attie.

Attie told the Guardian newspaper that he modeled his fictional congressman on Obama in the summer of 2004, after being wowed by Obama’s keynote address at the Democratic National Convention.

“I drew inspiration from him in drawing this character,” said Attie, who worked as a speechwriter for Al Gore, Bill Clinton and Dick Gephardt before moving to Hollywood. “He had done a great speech at the convention (which nominated John Kerry) and people were beginning to talk about him.”

Like any good political operative, Attie picked up the phone and called Obama aide David Axelrod for the back story.

“I said, ‘Tell me about this guy Barack Obama.’”

Latino actor Jimmy Smits had already been cast for the show, so Attie was particularly interested in how Obama addressed the issue of race. He said Axelrod’s answers helped him conceive Santos’s approach to his own Hispanic identity.

They also spurred him to make his character, you guessed it, a former community organizer. Santos is married, with two young children. And though his political rivals hammer away at his inexperience, he manages to prevail through inspiring speeches, a message of change, grassroots organizing – and several, extraordinarily lucky breaks.

Attie tells the Guardian that Axelrod, now chief strategist for the Obama campaign, joked in a recent email: “We’re living your scripts!”

Harder to explain is why Republicans are also channeling the show’s last season, which aired on NBC in early 2006.

In the final episodes, Santos runs against GOP Sen. Arnold Vinick, played by Alan Alda, a maverick from the West who beats out a preacher rival (resembling Pat Robertson more than Mike Huckabee). Vinick is portrayed as a straight-shooter mistrusted by the party’s conservatives because of his views on some social issues. Sound familiar?

But those looking for prophetic signs about the 2008 race may be disappointed.

In the show, Santos wins the presidency by a narrow margin, but that was not what the writers originally intended, according to The New York Times.

In fact, the script had Vinick winning – until actor John Spencer, who played Santos’s running-mate, Leo McGarry, died of a heart attack in December, 2005. The show’s creators decided it would simply be too tough on viewers if they killed off McGarry’s character, and then let his rival win. So they wrote a second ending.

      Take your pick.
