GOP targets Obama bundler Steve Westly

Lo and behold, relationship maps are popping up in political ads.

A new Republican National Committee ad uses a visual similar to Muckety maps to illustrate federal dollars going to venture capitalist Steven Westly, a bundler for Barack Obama in 2008 and again this year.

The map above, generated by our database, shows multiple links between Westly and the Obama administration’s Department of Energy.

Westly, an unsuccessful candidate for California governor in 2006, sits on the Secretary of of Energy Advisory Board. He was also guest at the dinner meeting Obama held with tech leaders last year at the home of venture capitalist L. John Doerr.

His venture capital firm, Westly Group, has invested in companies that have received DOE funding through alternative-energy programs. (To be fair, some of that funding began during the Bush administration. For a thorough fact checking, see the Washington Post, which awarded the RNC 1 Pinocchio.)
